THE RISK OF EXPLOSION IN THE CHEMICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

In the chemical and pharmaceutical industry bulk material, mostly organic in origin, is treated during the course of production. Small dust particles with specific explosive properties are released from these materials or substances into the air.

When mixed with air, this fine powder creates an explosive concentration inside and around production facilities. A mechanical spark or static discharge can occur inadvertently at the same location, or the surrounding surfaces can become heated. These conditions lead to the inevitable result of a sharp increase in local energy, heat and pressure. A sudden explosion is inevitable.

COMBINED ELEMENTS LEADING TO IGNITION AND EXPLOSION

Ignition and subsequent combustion occurs in the same place and at the same time:

  • Substances characteristic of exothermic reactions (e.g. dust particles of organic material),
  • Sufficient amount of oxygen (or oxidizing agents in general),
  • Effective source of ignition

The risks of fire spreading and the resulting pressure waves after the explosion threaten not only the equipment and structure of the buildings, but primarily the health and lives of workers.

THE RISK OF CHAIN EXPLOSIONS

In industrial equipment that commonly consists of a spray dryer, vibrating chute, centrifuge, etc., a chain reaction of explosions may, under certain circumstances, be triggered, because different technologies are interconnected by an air-driven transport system. Underestimating the risk of explosion separation can bring dire consequences and even lead to a loss of human lives and destruction of equipment and entire buildings.
